DEVOTIONAL: I SHALL NOT WANT

“You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children… There I will provide for you.”

Genesis 45:10–11

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

When Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, the words he speaks are not of judgment but of nearness and provision: “You will stay close by me… and I will give you the best of the land.”

This is the heart of redemption. The God who could rightly condemn us instead draws us near. He not only forgives; He provides. He not only spares; He blesses. To dwell in Goshen was not merely to survive famine—it was to flourish under favour.

The same voice still calls: Stay close by Me.” Proximity to God is the promise of provision. To be near the Shepherd is to never lack. The closer you draw, the richer the land becomes, for His nearness is the true inheritance.

WORD FOCUS

  • Hebrew: teshev (תֵּשֵׁב): “you shall dwell, remain, stay.” From yashav—”to sit, abide, make one’s home.”
  • Greek (LXX): katoikēseis (κατοικήσεις ): “you will dwell, settle, inhabit.” Used also of God dwelling among His people (Revelation 21:3).

To dwell is not to visit but to abide, to make one’s home. God’s promise is not of a passing refuge but a permanent nearness.

PRAYER

Lord, You call me close, not as a stranger but as a child. You promise not only survival but the best of the land in Your presence. Keep me near You today. Let me find my rest, my joy, and my provision in the shelter of Your nearness. Amen.

“Lord, I stay close to you where Your provision is bountiful.
