AUDIO PODCAST
In the journey of life, many of us carry wounds—deep, invisible scars left by trauma, disappointment, and pain. These broken places in our hearts often remain hidden, yet they shape how we think, feel, and relate to God and others. Left unhealed, they become fertile ground for spiritual oppression, robbing us of peace and freedom.
But there is hope. There is a path not only to healing but to transcendence—a restoration that goes beyond mere time and superficial comfort. The key is found in the identity we hold in Christ and the intentional surrender of our hearts to His transformative power.
In this post, we will explore how to confront broken-heartedness with faith, wisdom, and spiritual discipline, uprooting the enemy’s foothold and reclaiming the abundant life God has promised.
DEALING WITH BROKEN-HEARTEDNESS
Keep in mind that trauma—deep emotional wounds and unresolved pain—frequently serves as an open door through which demonic influences can gain access. When the heart and mind are weakened or vulnerable due to past hurts, it creates fertile ground for spiritual oppression or deception to take root. These hidden wounds, if left unhealed, can become strongholds that allow negative forces to manipulate thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, making it harder to experience true freedom and peace.
Time alone does not heal wounds of the soul. These deep, soulish injuries are not simply erased by the passing of days or years. True healing and transcendence come from actively claiming your identity in Christ—the source of wholeness and restoration. It is through embracing who you are in Him that your inner brokenness is made whole, and your spirit is renewed beyond the reach of past hurts.
It’s possible to become addicted to a certain kind of sadness—essentially, we replace one emotional state with another that takes its place. Because e-motion literally means energy-in-motion, emotions drive and motivate us. When we repeatedly yield to negative emotions or destructive patterns, demonic energies can latch onto us with their hooks and tentacles, gaining influence because we submit to them.
James 4:7 instructs us to,
“submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
This highlights a spiritual principle: submission directs our allegiance and power. However, by the law of reversibility, the opposite is also true—we can “submit to the devil” that is the e-motion he comes with, because we give in to harmful emotional cycles and resist God’s guidance, thereby allowing darkness to gain ground in our lives.
Our emotions, when mismanaged or left unchecked, can become gateways for spiritual bondage. The key to freedom lies in consciously choosing to submit to God’s authority over our hearts and minds, resisting any forces—whether internal or external—that seek to enslave us.
That means rejecting the lie and aligning ourselves with the truth of God’s word.
We must also intentionally pray for God to redeem our past hurts, disappointments, and painful experiences—any traumatic event, even accidents—that have left deep wounds in our hearts. It is essential to revisit those moments, reflect on what happened, and consciously assign new, godly meaning to them. By doing this, we uproot the enemy’s foothold in our lives at its very source. This is why Paul admonishes us in Ephesians 4:27,
“Do not give the devil a foothold.”
When we allow God to transform our understanding and interpretation of painful events, we prevent those wounds from becoming gateways for ongoing spiritual attack or bondage—we essentially cut them off at the root.
IN THE FIELD
Katie Souza describes a revelation she received regarding “brokenhearted syndrome” as a significant issue, positing that addressing emotional pain can lead to miraculous recovery. It introduces a medical condition called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, which is likened to an octopus due to its physical appearance and the sensation it causes. This condition, named after the Japanese word for octopus, is presented as a physical manifestation of a wounded heart, characterized by a squeezing sensation in the chest. The discussion emphasizes the interplay between emotional and physical experiences in this syndrome.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Brokenhearted Syndrome as the Root Cause: Brokenhearted syndrome is identified as a fundamental issue, or “the root.” Once the “pain in the soul” associated with this syndrome is addressed, individuals can experience significant healing or “any kind of miracle.”
Medical Condition Resembling an Octopus: Brokenhearted syndrome is a medical condition. Visually, it looks like an octopus. The sources mention a graphic that depicts it looking “like an octopus inside the heart, all the tentacles coming out.”
Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: The medical term for this condition is Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. “Takotsubo” is a Japanese word for octopus, which aligns with its octopus-like appearance.
Physical Sensation: The condition can manifest as a squeezing sensation around the heart. This feeling is described as a,
“pain in your chest, a tightness in your chest, a wave like a pumping–not the heart pumping, but a wave of a squeeze happening around you. A squeeze at the very core of your heart.”
Emotional and Physical Manifestation: The sensation can be an emotional feeling or a physical feeling.
Spiritual Connection: There was a sense that it was related to a “water spirit” that felt “kind of like an octopus.” This connection was further understood when the medical background (Takotsubo meaning octopus) was combined with this spiritual insight. God is also giving more “revelation” about it.
Remember, not every physical symptom has a physical cause. It may manifest physically, but its origin is spiritual.
FIVE-STEP GUIDE TO HEALING BROKEN-HEARTEDNESS AND WALKING IN FREEDOM
STEP 1: IDENTIFY AND ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR BROKENNESS
Before healing can begin, honestly recognize the wounds, trauma, and emotional pain within your heart and mind. Relax. Breath deeply. Go back to the moment. Don’t minimize or avoid these areas. Bring them into the light through prayerful reflection and journaling. Acknowledge how these broken places have affected your thoughts, feelings, and spiritual life.
Key action: Name the pain and invite God’s presence into those specific areas.
STEP 2: RENEW YOUR MIND WITH GOD’S TRUTH
Replace lies, negative patterns, and destructive emotions with the truth of Scripture about who you are in Christ. This is a daily, intentional practice of meditating on verses that affirm your identity as beloved, whole, and victorious. Use tools like memorization, declaration, and writing out promises of God.
Example verse: “He restores my soul; He guides me in the right path.” (Psalm 23:3)
Key action: Regularly feed your mind and heart with the Word to uproot false beliefs and reprogram your heart.
STEP 3: EMBRACE FORGIVENESS AS A KEY TO FREEDOM
Forgiveness is essential in healing broken-heartedness. This includes forgiving yourself for any role you may have had in causing, allowing, or entering into painful situations, and extending forgiveness to others who have hurt or wronged you. Forgiveness breaks spiritual chains, removes bitterness, and opens the door for God’s peace to flow. Without forgiveness, wounds remain open and the enemy can maintain a foothold.
Key action: Pray sincerely for the grace to forgive yourself and others, releasing all offence into God’s hands.
STEP 4: ACTIVATE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY THROUGH PROCLAMATION
Faith-filled words have power to change your inner landscape and spiritual environment. Speak aloud your identity in Christ and declare freedom over your emotions and circumstances. Proclaim God’s promises over your heart and resist any spiritual oppression by naming it and commanding it to flee. James 4:7: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Depending how long you have allowed the neemy to “burrow in,” this might not be a one-time action. Resist until you experience release.
Key action: Practice daily declarations of truth and spiritual resistance prayers.
STEP 5: REASSIGN VALUE AND MEANING TO PAST PAINS
Revisit painful memories and experiences with God’s guidance and assign new, redemptive meaning to them. This is a crucial step to uproot the enemy’s foothold and prevent bitterness or trauma from becoming strongholds. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His perspective on those events and how they can be transformed for your growth and testimony. Place the situation is under the blood of Jesus, and assign new value to it based on the word of God.
Key action: Journal or speak aloud your new interpretations, focusing on God’s redemptive plan rather than victimhood.
STEP 6: GUARD YOUR HEART AND MAINTAIN SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE
Healing is ongoing. Establish habits to guard your heart and mind against falling back into old emotional patterns. This includes prayer, worship, fellowship, accountability, and staying rooted in God’s Word. Be vigilant against subtle ways the enemy may try to regain a foothold through unresolved emotions or discouragement.
Ephesians 4:27: “Do not give the devil a foothold,” and, “My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not lose sight of them; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to the whole body. Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.”
Key action: Create daily or weekly spiritual check-ins and surrender moments to God.
STEP 7: PURSUE DELIVERANCE AND CONTINUOUS SPIRITUAL CLEANSING
Why it matters: Spiritual wounds and emotional brokenness often create openings for demonic influence or strongholds. While forgiveness, renewing the mind, and proclamation are vital, many ministry leaders stress that real, lasting freedom requires a proactive spiritual cleansing—often called deliverance. This means identifying and renouncing any occult ties, curses, generational iniquities, or demonic footholds linked to your pain or trauma. It’s about ongoing vigilance to maintain purity and freedom.
What deliverance ministers teach:
- Bill Subritzky highlights the necessity of renouncing sin and evil spirits by name, commanding them to leave in Jesus’ name, and filling yourself continually with the Holy Spirit.
- Derek Prince stresses breaking generational curses and renouncing false beliefs and lies the enemy uses to deceive you.
- Bob Larson focuses on discerning spiritual oppression signs and applying biblical authority in deliverance prayers.
Key actions:
- Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any hidden strongholds or spiritual ties connected to your brokenness.
- Renounce all ungodly attachments, curses, and lies in Jesus’ name.
- Pray for the infilling and empowerment of the Holy Spirit to guard and strengthen your spirit.
- Seek pastoral or deliverance ministry support if needed for deep-rooted or persistent issues.
