“And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of every man grieved for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.” — 1 Samuel 30:6
For years I studied faith as a concept—an idea, a doctrine, a spiritual requirement. But this week something shifted. Faith became startlingly practical, almost disarmingly simple. And I believe this shift may strengthen you today as well.
→ In Greek, the word for faith comes from peitho, which means “to be fully persuaded.”
→ By contrast, the word for unbelief, apeitheō, means “to refuse to be persuaded.”
That’s it. No mystery. No spiritual gymnastics. Just a story we have become persuaded of.
Every moment of our lives, we are already being persuaded by something—our fears, our past, our cultural lies, our circumstances, social engineers, or Scripture. The question has never been whether we are persuaded, but by what.
The good news: We can choose what persuades us. We can strengthen ourselves in the Lord.
David understood this in his darkest hour:
“But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”
— 1 Samuel 30:6
He was distressed, exhausted, rejected, and surrounded by men ready to stone him, looking for someone to blame for their problems. Yet he reached deep—not into self-confidence, but into God-confidence. He reminded himself of God’s promises and his experience with God. And that inner persuasion changed the outcome of everything:
“So [in this manner] David recovered all…”
— 1 Samuel 30:18
Paul tells us how this persuasion grows:
“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by [hearing] the word of Christ.”
— Romans 10:17
Brothers, in a world that increasingly undermines Christian values, conviction, authority, and godly strength, we must learn what David learned:
Speak to your soul. Remind yourself of who God is. Persuade yourself of His Promises.
2 Corinthians 1:20
This is not pretending—it is aligning with truth until your heart believes the right story again.
And when persuasion shifts, recovery begins.

DEVOTIONAL PRAYER
Father, strengthen my heart today.
Help me persuade my heart again of who You are and who I am in You.
Silence every voice of fear, doubt, and discouragement.
Let Your Word become the loudest voice in my mind.
Teach me, like David, to draw strength from You until faith rises again.
And let every area of my life move from distress to recovery as I embrace persuasion.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
