“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delighteth in his way.”
—Psalm 37:23
I’ve come to realise that what many people call luck is often just the visible echo of an invisible alignment. From the etymology of luck—from the Middle Dutch luc, meaning “chance, fortune, something that befalls you”—we see that luck has always been understood as something external, unpredictable, and arbitrary.
In Germanic usage, geluk or Glück speaks of success and favourable turning, while misluk refers to failure or a poor turn of fortune—sometimes even a sour or troubled disposition.
The Christian life is the exact opposite of chance: nothing in your life “befalls” you randomly. You are not governed by the roll of cosmic dice. You are held, guided, and deliberately fathered by a God who is intentional, good and loves you deeply.
The world says: “You’re lucky.”
Heaven says: “You’re positioned.”
The world says: “What a chance encounter.”
Heaven says: “What precise orchestration.”
The world says: “Fate smiled on you.”
Heaven says: “Favour followed you.”
Often what people call luck is simply heaven’s anonymous intervention. As believers, we don’t live under luck but under light (Luke 12:27)—the light of His counsel, His covenant, and His covering.
“In Him [Christ Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of men.”
John 1:1-4
Psalm 37:23 tells us: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD.” That means nothing in your life is random. Every open door, every breakthrough, is part of an intentional choreography designed for your good.
So in a strange way, yes—you are the “lucky Christian,” and strangely, the more you pray, the luckier you get. Not because of randomness, but because of relationship. Because you walk with the God who governs all outcomes. Because Christ Himself has become your portion, your destiny, your divine “alignment.”
Your life is only a gamble to the degree that you do not pray and instead wait to see how the “dice” fall. Your future is not a probability but, in Christ, an established fact. Your journey is not a statistical outcome, a numbers game, but an alignment or misalignment with Christ. When we choose to actively abide in His presence, we are choosing to live in the brightness of His countenance, where we thrive.
Luck—light, brightness—doesn’t mean what we think it means. Follow the link to find out more about the true origin and etymology of the word “luck.”
A PRAYER OF REMEMBRANCE
Father, thank You that my life is not left to chance. Thank You that I walk under Your favour, not under fate; under Your sovereignty, not under statistics. Order my steps today. Give me eyes to see Your hand in what others call coincidence. Let every part of my life align with Your will, and let my heart rest fully in the confidence that You are guiding my way. I am not lucky—I am loved, chosen, and carried. Amen.
