MARRIAGE: COUPLES WHO PRAY TOGETHER STAY TOGETHER – A BIBLICAL & SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

AUDIO PODCAST

The phrase Couples who pray together stay together is not just an inspirational saying—it is supported by both Scripture and sociological studies. When a couple prays together, they are inviting God into their relationship, fostering spiritual unity, and strengthening their bond through divine guidance and mutual submission.

1. THE BIBLICAL FOUNDATION OF PRAYING TOGETHER

A. SPIRITUAL UNITY STRENGTHENS MARRIAGE

The Bible repeatedly emphasises the importance of unity in faith. Praying together is one of the most powerful ways to cultivate that unity.

👉 MATTHEW 18:19-20 (ESV)

“Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

  • When a husband and wife agree in prayer, they align their hearts and desires with God’s will.
  • This verse highlights the spiritual power of agreement—when a couple seeks God together, He is present in their midst.

B. A THREEFOLD CORD IS NOT EASILY BROKEN

👉 ECCLESIASTES 4:12 (ESV)

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

  • A marriage built on two people alone can be fragile, but when God is the third strand in the relationship, it is strengthened beyond natural limitations.
  • Praying together invites God into the marriage as the binding force, ensuring stability and endurance.

C. HUSBANDS MUST PRAY TO AVOID HINDRANCES

👉 1 PETER 3:7 (ESV)

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honour to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

  • When a husband fails to honour his wife, his own prayers are affected—this implies that marital unity is deeply tied to spiritual effectiveness.
  • A husband and wife who pray together and honour one another keep the lines of communication open with both God and each other.
  • The most direct line of communication to another is through God.

D. WIVES MUST PRAY TO AVOID REBELLION

👉 PROVERBS 14:1 (ESV)

“The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.”

  • A wife has the power to build or break her home through her words, actions, and attitudes.
  • A woman who seeks God’s wisdom in prayer will cultivate an atmosphere of peace, love, and spiritual strength in her marriage.
  • Just as a husband must honour his wife for his prayers to be effective, a wife must walk in wisdom and discernment to strengthen her marriage.

👉 PROVERBS 31:26 (ESV)

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

  • Prayer helps a wife guard her words so that she speaks life over her husband rather than tearing him down.
  • A praying wife is a wise wife, one who brings encouragement and godly counsel into her home.

👉 1 PETER 3:1-2 (ESV)

“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives—when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”

  • A wife’s godly character and prayerful life can have a transformative effect on her marriage.
  • Even when a husband struggles spiritually, a wife’s faithfulness in prayer and conduct can draw him closer to God.
  • When we rejects God’s chain of authority we are rejecting God Himself.

A wife who prays for her husband partners with God in shaping his heart and their home. When both spouses pray together and honour God’s design, they create an unshakeable foundation for their marriage.

E. JESUS AS THE CENTRE OF THE RELATIONSHIP

👉 COLOSSIANS 3:14 (ESV)

“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

  • Prayer is an act of love and submission to God and to one another.
  • We cannot love others unless we love ourselves. We cannot love ourselves unless we love God first—through abiding prayer—since it is only in His presence that we know that we are loved
  • A marriage where both partners seek God daily will naturally grow stronger in love and harmony.
  • GOD IS LOVE.” – 1 John 4:8
Like an invisible thread He binds our hearts in harmony. God is the divine chord of love that holds us together when we abide in Him through prayer.
  • Prayer is the greatest act/ demonstration of love there is.
  • Thus prayer becomes the foundation for life since it is the foundation of a relationship with God. Prayer is the realignment of the world with God, and that realignment begins with us.

2. SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES ON PRAYER & MARITAL STABILITY

Several scientific studies confirm that couples who pray together experience stronger marriages, greater satisfaction, and lower divorce rates.

A. COUPLES WHO PRAY TOGETHER HAVE A LOWER DIVORCE RATE

A study conducted by Gallup and the National Association of Marriage Enhancement found that:

  • The general divorce rate in the U.S. is around 50%.
  • Couples who pray together daily have a divorce rate of less than 1%.

This suggests that spiritual intimacy significantly protects marriages from breakdown.

B. PRAYER STRENGTHENS EMOTIONAL CONNECTION

A study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (2010) found that prayer increases feelings of unity, satisfaction, and emotional bonding in couples.

👉 KEY FINDINGS:

  • Prayer enhances communication and helps couples resolve conflicts more effectively.
  • Couples who pray for each other report higher levels of trust and forgiveness.
  • Prayer helps reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a more peaceful household.

C. THE POWER OF INTERCESSORY PRAYER IN MARRIAGE

A study by Frank D. Fincham and Steven R.H. Beach (2014) published in Psychology of Religion and Spirituality found that:

  • Intercessory prayer (praying for one’s spouse) leads to increased relationship satisfaction.
  • Those who prayed for their spouse regularly had a greater ability to forgive and overlook minor offenses.

This aligns perfectly with Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:44 about praying for others fostering love and transformation.

3. WHY PRAYER STRENGTHENS MARRIAGE

IT BUILDS EMOTIONAL INTIMACY: Sharing spiritual experiences deepens emotional bonds.
IT ENCOURAGES FORGIVENESS: Bringing grievances before God softens hearts and reduces resentment.
IT REALIGNS FOCUS ON GOD: Instead of seeing each other as the enemy, couples unite against common struggles.
IT INVITES DIVINE INTERVENTION: God’s wisdom and peace enter the relationship, strengthening it against trials.
IT SETS A FOUNDATION FOR A GODLY LEGACY: Children who see their parents praying together are more likely to have strong faith and relationships.

4. PRACTICAL WAYS TO PRAY AS A COUPLE

A. SET A PRAYER ROUTINE

  • Start with just a few minutes each day.
  • Pray before bed or in the morning to set the tone for the day.
  • Use a structured prayer guide if needed.

B. PRAY SPECIFICALLY FOR EACH OTHER

  • Ask, “How can I pray for you today?”
  • Pray for your spouse’s work, emotions, struggles, and spiritual growth.
  • Thank God for your spouse and affirm them in your prayers.

C. PRAY SCRIPTURE OVER YOUR MARRIAGE

  • EPHESIANS 5:25-26 – That husbands will love and lead well.
  • COLOSSIANS 3:13-14 – That you will walk in forgiveness and love.
  • PROVERBS 3:5-6 – That your marriage will be led by God.

D. WORSHIP & READ THE WORD TOGETHER

  • Read a psalm or a short passage together before prayer.
  • Sing or play worship music to create a prayerful atmosphere.
  • Discuss what God is teaching each of you in your quiet time.

INVEST YOUR TIME OR SPEND YOUR TIME

The time you don’t spend in prayer, you will inevitably spend fixing unnecessary problems

Jesus’ words to His disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane serve as a sobering warning:

👉 LUKE 22:40, 46 (ESV)

“Pray that you may not enter into temptation [testing through trouble]… Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

The Greek word for “temptation” here is πειρασμός (peirasmos), which carries the meaning of a trial, test, or enticement toward sin. But its deeper etymology connects to the idea of trouble—a burden that could have been avoided. Jesus was not just warning about moral failure but about unnecessary struggles that arise when we fail to remain spiritually vigilant.

The reality is this: the time we don’t spend in prayer will often be spent dealing with avoidable consequences. We either invest in strengthening our spiritual defences, or we leave ourselves open to attacks that force us into damage control later.

NOT MARRIED? FLYING SOLO? START PRAYING NOW!

if you are not yet married, now is the time to start praying for your future spouse. ask god to prepare both of you spiritually, emotionally, and mentally for the journey ahead. a strong marriage is built on a foundation of prayer, so if you can’t pray with someone while dating, that’s a red flag—you shouldn’t be with someone you can’t seek god with. prayer reveals the condition of the heart, and a relationship without it lacks the spiritual unity necessary for a lasting covenant. instead of just looking for the “right” person, focus on becoming the right person—one who is already committed to walking with god in prayer.

At the end of the day, prayer is the thin red chord that will save you, your marriage, and your family.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of marriage and the power of prayer. Teach us to seek You together, to grow in unity, and to love each other as You have called us to. Help us to build a relationship that glorifies You and withstands every trial. May our home be a place of peace, faith, and love, rooted in Your Word and strengthened through prayer.

We surrender our marriage to You, knowing that a threefold cord is not easily broken. Be the centre of our relationship, and guide us into deeper intimacy with You and with each other.
